Thinking About Surrendering Your Pet?

We understand that life can change quickly — housing issues, financial stress, safety concerns, or behavior challenges can make caring for a pet feel overwhelming. Before starting a surrender application, we encourage you to review the resources below.
Many common challenges can be resolved with support, and we want to help keep pets with the people who love them whenever possible.

  • If you are facing eviction, housing instability, or a temporary living situation that does not allow pets, surrendering your pet may not be your only option.

You may have alternatives that allow you to keep your pet safely.

    Community Pet Food Pantry

When available, our community pet food pantry may provide:

    • Dog & cat food

    • Treats

    • Cat litter

Supplies depend on donations and may not always be available.

Low-Cost Veterinary Care (Vaccines & Wellness)

If vet costs are a concern, these options may help:

Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV)

    • Low-cost vaccination clinics

    • Flea, tick & heartworm prevention Appointment required🔗https://www.hshv.org

    Vetco Clinics (Inside Petco)

    All About Animals Rescue

Michigan Humane – One Health Clinics

  • Many behavior challenges are fixable with simple changes and are very common — especially during times of stress or transition.

House Soiling / Litter Box Issues

    Try:

    • More frequent potty breaks or litter box cleaning

    • Ensuring enough litter boxes (rule of thumb: one per cat + one extra)

    • Ruling out medical issues with a vet

    • Using enzymatic cleaners to remove scent markers

Pulling on Leash / Jumping / Too Much Energy

    Try:

    • Short, frequent walks instead of one long one

    • Mental enrichment (snuffle mats, puzzle feeders)

    • Reward calm behavior with treats and praise

    • Basic training videos or group classes (many are free online!)

    Anxiety, Destruction, or Vocalizing

    Try:

    • Predictable routines

    • Safe spaces (crate, covered bed, quiet room)

    • Increased enrichment and exercise

    • Calming aids (pheromone diffusers, calming chews — ask a vet)

Many behavior issues worsen during housing changes, schedule disruptions, or stress — and often improve once routines stabilize.

Still Considering Surrendering

If you’ve explored the options above and feel surrender is still necessary, we understand. We also encourage you to check availability with other shelters or rescues, as space and resources vary.
